As those on luxury coach tours to Cambridge explore the town's university buildings, it may be interesting to note some of the famous faces who have passed through the doors in recent years.

Three of the most popular living Brits were educated at the renowned institution, according to recent research.

The YouGov poll established a new list of the top 20 best-loved "national treasures", Cambridge News reported.

Included are Stephen Hawking, Stephen Fry and Sir David Attenborough, who all once studied at Cambridge University.

Hawking is a world-famous cosmologist and theoretical physicist who has overcome his neuro-muscular dystrophy to become one of the world's top scientists.

He held what is believed to be the most celebrated academic role on Earth - the lucasian professor of mathematics - at the university from 1979 to 2009.

Fry is a much-loved writer, actor, comedian and TV presenter, who has recently hosted quiz show QI.

Meanwhile, Attenborough is one of the most recognisable wildlife experts on the planet after more than five decades of hosting nature programmes.

In other news, Cambridge Network has revealed that local restaurant Alimentum is set to participate in the Fight Hunger Eat Out campaign to help malnourished children and their families around the world.
