About Amsterdam:
The name is derived from the Dutch words Amstel and dam, which mean literally dam on the river Amstel. Amsterdam was one of the most important ports in the Dutch Golden Age, and the River Amstel is a large part of the charm of this Dutch capital and largest city of the Netherlands. Nowadays, Amsterdam combines art, history and culture in the 5th largest tourist attraction in Europe.
The Dam is a popular site for all with options ranging from a relaxing canal ride, art museums housing large collections of Dutch art, or for the more liberal crowd, many discothèques and coffee shops. A trip to Amsterdam is worth it just to see the canals that were the result of intricate city planning back in the 17th century!
Things to Do and See:
Anne Frank House:
See the Secret Annex where the Frank family hid along with the Van Pels family and Fritz Pfeffer where they hid successfully, from July 1942 to July 1944, from the Nazis. On display here is Anne's diary which is known the world over as one of the most influential texts of the 20th century.
Van Gogh Museum:
A must-see, this museum houses the largest collection of Van Gogh paintings in the world. Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands and spent much of his time as a young artist there. Notable works displayed include one of his versions of "Sunflowers" which he painted for his close friend, Paul Gaugin.
The Red Light District:
One of the most popular destinations in Amsterdam, this area is not for all, but those who care to venture to this neighbourhood where prostitution and the sex industry abound, will see something that is quite incomparable. An optional walking tour through this neighbourhood is provided by your Anderson Tours Tour Manager on Day 1!
A canal cruise:
Either by day or by night, a canal cruise is a relaxing way to see the city that was built to be seen from the water. The half concentric canals are a great way to get around without getting lost! Sit back, relax and enjoy!
About Volendam:
Volendam is a popular tourist attraction in the Netherlands, well-known for its old fishing boats and the traditional clothing still worn by some residents. The women's costume of Volendam, with its high, pointed bonnet, is one of the most recognizable of the Dutch traditional costumes, and is often featured on tourist postcards and posters
About Brugge:
Brugge is made up of winding cobblestone streets as well and narrow canals which gave the city the prestigious award of the "European City of Culture" in 2002. Also known as Burges, this city has most of its medieval architecture intact and was thus named a World Heritage Site in 2000. Brugge is known for its lace, and many beers include the name of the city. The Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck was born in Brugge as well! |
