About Berlin...
The captital and largest city of Germany, Berlin is known for it's rich, but tumultous history. Berlin was separated by the infamous Berlin Wall until 1989, and although little remains of the wall now, remnants can still been seen at the East Side Gallery. The architecture in this interesting and laidback city reflects the different national governments from the 19th century to today. Much of Berlin was destroyed during World War II, even after bombing damage, the Brandenburg Gate still stands from the 18th century.
Berlin is also an incredibly green city, with the Grune-wald or Green Wood, a huge park in the southwest part of the city, and it brags that it has more trees than shops. All in all, Berlin is unconventional and a major cultural centre sure to offer something new and different for all!
Things to see & do...
* Brandenburg Gate: This iconic landmark is one of the most famous in Europe and is even on the 10, 20 and 50 cent Euro coins!
* East Side Gallery: What remains of the wall is 1.3 km long with about 106 paintings! There are few portions of the wall left, and the artwork displayed on the walls has been deteriorating over the past decade as the elements and vandals have had their turn on this historic landmark. So be sure to see the East Side Gallery, as it remains the best place to see the wall's artwork in it's best condition.
* Museum Island: World famous, this island between the Spree River and Kupfergraben houses five museums, including the Old National Gallery. The Old National Gallery is an ever-changing museum with plenty of modern pieces, but don't fear if you like the more traditional exhibits, Monet, Manet, Renoir and Degas are displayed as well!
* Checkpoint Charlie: Formerly a checkpoint for crossing between East and West Berlin for foreigners and Allied forces, it is now a tourist attraction and a symbol of< |
